  • Following the fulfillment of his Air Force Scholarship, Dr. Young relocated to Dallas and embarked on his career in hospital-based anesthesia. Initially, he assisted Dr. Garza at a surgery center, periodically extending his services to provide anesthesia in his office approximately every two months. With the shift away from hospitals offering operating room time to pediatric dental practitioners, and by word of mouth, Dr. Young's Office-Based Anesthesia (OBA) practice has flourished into a bustling daily operation. Recognizing the potential anxiety associated with sedation in this environment, he is eager to impart his extensive experience, empowering you to practice with confidence while delivering essential patient care.

Target Audience

Texas Licensed Dentists requiring biennial renewal of their level 1,2,3, or 4 sedation certificate.
Any interested dental professional. (This course does NOT meet requirements for initial certification)
Dental office staff interested in gaining a better understanding of sedation and anesthesia.

Event Learning Objectives

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the critical factors to evaluate when determining the appropriateness of sedation for dental procedures, including patient physical and mental status, language barriers, treatment tolerance, and procedure duration, as well as their impact on perioperative management.
  • Explore the diverse medical conditions that may affect patients undergoing dental procedures, including asthma, diabetes, hypertension, Down's syndrome, and others, and learn how to assess, optimize, and manage these conditions to ensure safe and successful outcomes.
  • Develop a holistic perspective on the preoperative evaluation process, including considerations related to airway assessment, neck mobility, upper lip bite tests, and the importance of documentation and checklists in enhancing patient safety and care delivery in dental settings.
  • Understand the indications and patient management considerations for conscious sedation in dental procedures, including the assessment of dental phobia, anxiety, medical conditions, and physical limitations, while emphasizing the importance of pre-sedation evaluations and safety measures.
  • Explore the diverse pharmacological agents used in sedation dentistry, including their mechanisms of action, dosing guidelines, and potential risks and benefits, with a focus on benzodiazepines, opioids, and other sedative drugs commonly employed in dental practice.
  • Gain insights into the different sedation levels, from minimal sedation to deep sedation and general anesthesia, while comprehending the unique characteristics, monitoring requirements, and applications of each level, enabling informed decision-making in dental sedation procedures.
  • Recognize the critical importance of thorough airway assessment in sedation dentistry, including the indications for airway management, factors contributing to airway difficulties, and the need for assessing potential challenges such as loose teeth, removable appliances, and dentition.
  • Understand the various methods and classification systems used for systematic pre-intubation airway assessment, such as the Mallampati classification, Brodsky Tonsillar Pillar Score, neck mobility evaluation, and the upper lip bite test, to determine the likelihood of airway difficulty and optimize patient safety during dental procedures.
  • Appreciate the value of a structured preoperative evaluation and documentation process in sedation dentistry, drawing parallels to the aviation industry's use of checklists for ensuring comprehensive and consistent assessment of patient factors that could impact airway management and overall procedural success.
  • Understand the importance of airway adjuncts in maintaining a patent airway during sedation and emergency situations, including their classification into simple upper airway devices, supraglottic airway aids, infraglottic airway aids, and endotracheal tubes, and their role in facilitating unobstructed airflow to the lungs.
  • Familiarize oneself with the characteristics and applications of simple upper airway adjuncts such as the Oral Airway (OA) and Nasal Airway, recognizing their role as rescue devices in cases of obstructed airways, and the criteria for their usage, including the presence or absence of a gag reflex.
  • Explore the diversity of supraglottic airway aids (SGAs), including first and second-generation devices, and their expanding roles in airway management, intubation assistance, and emergency situations, while appreciating the benefits and limitations of SGAs compared to endotracheal tubes, with a focus on aspiration risk and cuff seal pressure.
  • Recognize the importance of having a well-practiced emergency management plan in a dental office and the critical role of timely intervention in various medical crises such as airway obstruction, acute coronary syndrome, allergic reactions, bronchospasm, cardiac arrest, seizures, hyperventilation, hypoglycemia, myocardial infarction, and syncope.
  • Understand the key steps involved in managing dental office emergencies, including the ABCDs (Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Drugs/Defibrillate) approach, and how to perform initial assessments, provide appropriate interventions, administer medications when necessary, and establish airway patency to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes.
  • Familiarize oneself with the signs, symptoms, causes, and specific treatment protocols for various medical emergencies that may occur in a dental office setting, including when to call 911, administer oxygen, use defibrillation, and employ drugs like epinephrine, nitroglycerin, and antihistamines, while also recognizing the importance of positioning and monitoring vital signs during emergencies.
